When out and about with my iPhone I usually minimize downloading apps, streaming video, and other bandwidth hungry services in order to conserve the data provided by my carrier while connected over 3G or the like. I haven’t gone over my data allowance yet; knock on wood. In part, thanks must go out to the local businesses in Belleville, Ontario, Trenton and surrounding areas that offer free wifi services. In many cases, you do not even need to enter the business establishment; you can get a signal simply by being outside the building!

Connecting to a free Wifi network is simple enough; at least on an Iphone. For example, when a wireless network is available and you check your email, visit Facebook, or initiate some other Internet communication, a box will popup with the available wireless networks that the device can see. These will included protected and non-protect wifi networks. If you see a little lock () next to an available network, don’t bother trying to connect, it will fail without providing the correct type of security information. The wifi entries without a lock are free game though and you can usually connect without hassles; although occasionally they may fail to work as well.

You can tell if your connect to a Wifi network and not using data through your carrier (i.e. 3G) by looking at the top left of your iPhone screen. As you can see by the screenshots below, the first is connected to Rogers over 3G; the second is connect to a Wifi network.

See Photographs inQuinte.com for a list of Belleville, Ontario and Quinte area free Wifi hotspots

Photographs inQuinte is a website I setup to display my photographs from the Quinte area of old, rundown, dilapidated, rusted subjects like houses, farms, cars, trucks and other objects. A page called Free Wifi around Quinte West and Belleville Ontario has been created that lists free wifi hotspots in the Greater Quinte Area (GQA). The areas covered on this page include Belleville, Ontario, Trenton, Frankford, Brighton, Picton, Stirling, Campbellford, Madoc, Marmora, Tyendinaga and Napanee.

If you know of a free wifi network in one of the areas mentioned above, I encourage you to visit the Free Wifi around Quinte West and Belleville Ontario page where you can submit the details using the accompanying form.

Not just any photographs though, inQuinte will display pictures of old, rundown, dilapidated, rusted, corroded and abandoned subjects taken by me. Because Quinte is where I live and work, most of the photos will be from that region (i.e. Prince Edward County, Belleville, Trenton, Stirling, Brighton, Tyendinaga, Madoc and area). Keep in mind that there will be some posts where I’ve ventured outside the Quinte area.

I’ve also setup a Facebook group where you can join and post your own related photos.

This is the biggest opportunity of your life! Take it!

Losing a job can be a great time to explore new avenues, perhaps while on EI or doing something else menial (ie a job that is simply a stepping stone, or $$ income until you find what you really want).

This article revolves around a journey to find the position that you will do for a living and will truly enjoy. Many people I know, past and present are not happy with their employment situation. They wake up most mornings wondering “What the heck am I doing in this job?”, feeling a lack of options to change.

They feel stuck and have it in their head that they have no control over what it is they do for a living; for many, perhaps this will always be true but I’ve been there myself many a time. That being said, I realize it’s always easier to look at someone’s problems from the outside and see clear solutions to solve these challenges. And of course it is scary when confronted with the idea of change, there is usually resistance and negativity. It is always much easier to go with the flow and what you are used to … you feel comfortable.

It doesn’t have to be this way and even though I’m no expert, I will share my views, ideas and opinions of the so-called “job”.

I’m not going anywhere if I stay here

Whether good or bad, my tolerance has always been very low for workplace idiocy, power tripping, menial tasks, being belittled and that general feeling that “I’m not going anywhere if I stay here“. Below are some real jobs that I’ve held (going back 20 years), what my function was, and the reason I discontinued my employment or it discontinued me!

Metal Break-press operator

Function: Bend sheet metal into filing cabinet drawers
Reason for leaving: For a position like this, it doesn’t take much for me to walk away. I didn’t like the job right from the start and it was solely a means to bring in some coin; it’s always about the money… isn’t it? There were quite a few negatives to this position, including repetition, boring work, afternoon shift, loud and dirty working environment. The quit date was in early December which was also the same day they told me that I was being laid-off for the Christmas season (along with a few other lucky individuals) and might get a call back sometime in the new year. I was just coming off break when the foreman broke the good news and explained that my last day would be Friday; it was already Wednesday. The foreman was a little disappointed when he was informed by me that I was laying them off; effective immediately .

Transport truck driver (long-haul)

Off the road again… just can't wait to get off the road again…

Function: Pickup and deliver goods to northern US states, Quebec and Ontario
Reason for leaving: I’ve spent many years either working for myself (home-based business) or close to home. The wife and I have always spent most of our time together and honestly, I was surprised how driving long-haul and being away from home for long periods of a week or more at a time affected me. Although I enjoyed driving truck and the position in general, I would use any opportunity to get “home time”; to be with the wife. After a run was completed down to the US, there was usually a run coming back which would get me close to home. After that, instead of taking the next available run, I would choose one that doesn’t have to be delivered until days in advanced, allowing me to go home and hang out. You can make pretty good money with truck driving, but not when you’re spending time at home at every given opportunity! Like I was. Well even that extra time wasn’t enough and I eventually decided to give it up completely. The prospect of finding a local or short-haul position where I could be home every night didn’t work out for me neither; and so ends my truck driving career.

Computer Administration & Support

One method to quit your job

Function: Build & install custom computers and servers for the healthcare industry
Reason for leaving: Initially, this position started out great, building PC computers with DOS and servers running Novel Netware in a shop with a couple other guys. They expanded my responsibilities to include delivery and installation of those systems into USA and Canadian hospitals which was awesome! The first problem started when they told me that I was getting a substantial raise. I waited months and months and never did see that raise. (Problem #1) The other issue started when they increased my responsibilities again, putting me on the telephone help desk. I HATE the help desk, I’m a hands on type of support guy. (Problem #2) The final straw, and my subsequent firing was on one of those help desk days and feeling frustrated. One of the project managers asked me to come to his office. After walking into the office he informed me that I would be traveling to western Ontario to install a system into hospital. I thought about it for a second and then annouced that I would be unable to travel and install our systems until I get the raise that was promised. (Problem #3) Five minutes later I was canned.

The best part is that me and a couple other guys I worked with had an on going bet who would quit or get fired first; I WON! Just to make things a little clearer. The reason we had this ongoing bet was that the company was having a hard time, stocks were falling BIG time, a few people had already been let go, so it was just a matter of time before we all got the axe. In fact, that’s exactly what happened around a year after I departed.

Short-haul truck (G class) driver

Function: Local night courier delivery and pickup
Reason for leaving: Hmm… how can you leave before you even start? Working nights and driving a truck that only required a class G license (ie crap $$) were the only ingredients required to reconsider this accepted job offer. I was hired and scheduled to start the following week but called to quit the weekend before. Short and sweet … with no regrets.

Fine furniture delivery

Function: Driver & delivery of fine furniture using a 14′ cube van
Reason for leaving: This was my first full-time job and one that I stayed at the longest. (well that was way back in the day) It was another enjoyable job and I liked most of the people I worked with. Even the boss was cool. I don’t really have any specifics of why I quit, actually, I quit twice! The first time came about because of the co-worker that was in the truck with me. An older gentlemen who had absolutely no motivation or common sense whatsoever. I had to give him specific instruction for ever aspect of the job or nothing would get done. You can only tell someone so many times before it gets to be just a little frustrating. So I said screw it, and quit. Two days later, the boss hired be back with a raise… oh joy. I quit for a second time a day after that. This is interesting to note, because I really had no good reason to quit and at the time it may have seemed to the people around me; like a stupid thing to do. When I look back though, the boss sold that company a year or two later and shortly after that, the company went out of business. A good friend that worked at the company since its inception and was the boss’ right hand man for years was left high and dry, along with his screwed back; so much for loyalty in this case.

what the hell are you reading the post for!?

In Conclusion

To quit or not to quit, that is the question.

I’ve held many jobs in the past, some of which not lasting more that 1.5 years and many more that were considerably shorter. The circumstances surrounding my employment history and the methods used to exit those positions could be questioned, but it seemed justifiable at the time and even more so now. I can look back without regret and move forward in my life a little wiser and with a little more experience. You might consider me a “well rounded individual” with all the varied experiences I’ve had.

Am I happy in my current position providing website and computer services? You bet. This is one job that I will most likely stick around for, but make no mistake, If it were to end tomorrow … I would see it as an opportunity; it would be exciting and I wouldn’t resist. This “job” is what I call a “position”, mark my words there is a difference between having a job and a position.

A job is one in which you don’t want to get up for in the morning, you are bored, you know you can do better and so forth … a position is something you truly enjoy.

A couple more tips

Read! I’m not talking about fiction! Read books that will educate you in the areas you feel you would most benefit from. I’m my case, many computer, marketing, web, Internet and networking books have been read. I also read biographies of people who are successful. I respect and try to understand how they made their life, business, success and happiness work for them.

If you leave a job, you must have the ability to get another fairly quickly. The resume is only a small part of being able to do this. You MUST nail the interview! Be positive, confident, knowledgeable about the company & position, and respectful, but don’t kiss ass.

Have the drive or motivation to get out and pound the pavement. Many jobs aren’t advertised, so visit any company you would like to work for (even if they don’t have any current openings). Back in the day I would look through the yellow pages for my next prospective employer; Google is a better bet now.

Use your time wisely while on Employment Insurance to take a few courses, read books, study or brush up on things, try something new … the great thing is while you have some money coming in you don’t feel as pressured into accepting that next job!

I guess my point is, try to find something you love, or at least like to do and DO NOT settle for any less. There are always options and opportunities for the motivated person.

On the other hand, If you are comfortable in your job, already love or like what you do, or don’t have the motivation, or the mind set or need to try for something better; then what the hell are you reading this post for!?

The walking dead / zombie films are getting so popular these days. I’ve been into zombie films for a almost 3 decades; before they were cool. In my opinion the best walking dead movie ever created was Dawn of the Dead (1979), although, the most recent zombie effort; The Walking Dead: Season One is simply amazing. The special effects and realism are off the chart; I pretty much have couch lock when watching an episode or two.. or three…. About the only thing I don’t like about it is all the domestics. Seriously, a few people left on earth who have to deal with a crap load of zombies and are in a constant battle for survival still bitch and wine about the littlest things.

Particular things that make or break a Zombie film for me are:

The military or government can’t get overly involved, unless they’re zombie food . This is the reason I don’t care much for Resident Evil part II.

Very little domestic bickering among survivors. There should be a constant battle for survival and the hope of a better life. Stop hanging out in the woods and get in the action!

Everyone should capitalize on the fact that free stuff is everywhere and the law is non-existent. Drive your favorite car and blow some $#hit up! A little bit of destruction people!

Have you ever needed extra email accounts for multiple website registrations? How about running multiple Twitter accounts; can’t use the same email twice. In fact, it’s safe to say you can’t use the same email more than once for any type of online website or service registration. Until recently, I was setting up separate Gmail email accounts and then forwarding the messages to my primary account. This allowed me to setup multiple twitter accounts or signup on a website multiple times; not that I had much use for the latter. The other day I was thinking; wouldn’t be nice to setup an alias (an email that forward to another email address) under my primary email? This would solve my problem, reduce the number of emails I have to manage, and all those other Gmail accounts could be deleted! After searching around Gmail settings for a couple minutes, it became clear that there were no alias option available. My focus quickly switch to Google search to find a solution. The search term I entered was “email alias gmail” and what do you know, the very first search result was to a Google support page containing a kick butt solution.

So here it is. Whenever you need an alias email address, all you need to do is enter “+YourTextHere” after the first part of your email address (before the @ symbol).

Here are two examples

That’s it! The email address appears unique to registration forms and an activation email or other confirmation will arrive in your primary email inbox for the service you just signed up. There is no setup required. Simply append the extra information to your existing email address when signing up to any web service and you’re good to go.

Gmail Filters

One of the down sides with this virtual alias is that you cannot delete or disable it to stop receiving emails. But luckily there’s a solution for this as well. Go to the Filters tab within your Gmail settings and you can setup a rule that can perform an action on that email address. For example, if you decided; twitter sucks, I ain’t using it anymore . My background includes technologies such as file/print/web servers, computer hardware, ethernet networks, wireless networks, end users, website design, programming, graphic design, content management systems (CMS), web services; I think you get the idea. I don’t consider myself an expert in any of these areas, but more of a jack of all trades or put another way, well rounded. When first purchasing my iPhone, I was not made aware of any requirements regarding the iPhone Lithium-ion polymer battery. I took the device home and used it until only 17% of the battery was remaining, then plugged it in to let it fully charge. A couple days later I went back to the store where I purchased the device to ask a couple questions on a matter unrelated to the battery. During the conversation the subject of the iPhone lithium battery came up and I was informed that the battery should be fully drained and charged a few times or the battery life would be degraded by way of the battery memory. This was a shock and my initial thought was “great, I just screwed up my first iPhone 4 3Gs “

Be sure to fully charge your portable when you plug it in for the first time

After a little research I’ve come to realize that everything I was told about the battery doesn’t seem to be true.

Apple states that their lithium batteries should be fully charged when plugged in for the first time; nowhere is it mentioned that the battery should be discharged for performance and prolonging battery life. In fact, the only mention of fully discharging the battery relates to iPhone calibration and its ability to accurately report the percentage of battery life remaining, and that only needs to be performed every 4 to 8 weeks. To prolong the life span you have to reduce your depth of discharge (DoD). In a nutshell, the less that the battery discharges before recharging, the longer it will last. That being said, I now have a charger at home, work, and a car charger for when I’m on the road.

There are plenty of things you can do to extend the life of your battery which will be covered in an upcoming post.
